Story specific backstory would have revealed why she has abandonment issues and why that lead her to becoming a hit woman. Show me the person who doesn’t have abandonment issues, and I’ll show you the person who hasn’t figured it out yet. Finally, he blurted, “Um, because she has abandonment issues?” Nice try. Like the client I had who, when asked why his protagonist became a hit woman, paused for so long that it was clear he’d never even thought about it. ![]() So when asked why their protagonist did something, they’re stumped. Because writers are often discouraged from using backstory, it implies that they therefore don’t need to create backstory, either. The damage done by the avoid-backstory-myth goes even deeper. She wants unconditional love, she fears rejection. Without it, your protagonist has amnesia, so she can’t read meaning into anything, nor can she desire or fear anything except, of course, generically. The surprising truth is that backstory is the most seminal layer of any novel. We read at least one chapter together every night (but he had several nights at his grandparents and at overnight camp) so, while we enjoyed this book just as much as the last two, it did take us awhile to get through it! Definitely don’t take our speed of completion into account as an indicator of plot pace or our involvement in the story!įor those of you who aren’t familiar with the Nyxia Triad…definitely start with the first book: Nyxia. Unfortunately, due to our crazy schedules in May and June, it took us two months to finish Uprising. My son and I adored the first Nyxia books and were waiting expectantly for the final installment. Carly makes a reference to how the motel hadn’t aged from the pictures she had seen with her Aunt Viv from 35-years prior. The Sun Down collecting mold and flooding at the end was metaphorical. The fact that Viv went unnoticed for 4 days was part-luck (her roommate was out of town), and partly strategic (she had a cop who was covering for her and likely diverting suspicion or attention while Viv could disappear).Ģ. ![]() Throughout the book there were several references to Viv and Carly showing up for their shift to find the employee from the previous shift was already gone or leaving before their replacement showed up. ![]() ![]() This isn’t suggested in the book, but it’s also possible that the owners were getting kickbacks from the prostitutes and drug dealers who “set up shop” in the Sun Down. Nobody stayed there and the owners seemed resolved to let it exist until a catastrophe happened and they could collect the insurance payout (which they did).
